if i recall correctly, gsynaptics, gpointing-device-settings, and
synclient/syndaemon all butt heads with each other.  you might want
to double check that you don't have more than one running, and then
try just one.

there's also some xserver config that you might have to have enabled,
though i'm guessing that if you had it working once that it probably
wouldn't have broke itself...
