I've always had weird issues with Compiz and gnome themes too. I wouldn't call this a work-around necessarily but I've had no problems running emerald themes alongside compiz. Just install emerald from apt, choose your theme and then run :

/usr/bin/emerald --replace &

Make sure you add that line to your gnome startup scripts as well otherwise when you reboot your stuck back with the default gnome appearance from before.
