Thanks everyone for the info:
Seems almost everyone uses an on-line service, and most of these
services run $10/mo/user
for anything other than occasional use.
I'm sure I saw a free Linux VMTN appliance years ago for this, but I
can't find it now.
I finally wound up installing AllardSoft's FileTransfer Appliance:
http://www.allardsoft.com/filetransfer/
This is a BSD virtual machine, and seems to work much like yousendit ,
for a one -time $79 price
for the 10 user version with 2GB file size limit. I was also
able to proxy this as a subdomain
behind my Apache SSL web server ( though it supports SSL natively as
well )
I didn't see the beginning of this thread, so I hope I am not off base but here is another option (Droopy):

We use www.yousendit.com.
They have multiple levels of accounts from free to a branded multi-user
version.
User logs into yousendit.com, creates an email,
uploads the attachment (up to 2 gb), and an email is created with the
download link.
Not self hosted, nor open source, but flexible, cheap, and works
well for us.

So, if he drops a confidential file for one customer in to dropbox,
and then
uploads another to a 2nd user, can the 2nd customer see the 1st file ?
It doesn't appear this is for secure file transfer between multiple
clients.
