Softphone works on Gogo Inflight Internet, even via Openvpn. Plane background noise will be your biggest problem.
Fax is limited to 9600 baud for reliable use.
Older Burglar Alarm systems are ****** NOT ***** "officially code sanctioned" ******** in Philadelphia. Check with L&I for up to date info. If you disagree with this please post links to official sources of documentation. There may be different rules for commercial vs residential. Also check with your insurance company they may have different rules.

The weakness point for any alarm system is the exposed POTS line. Any system where life and property need to be protected, should have a power backup, and/or POTS backup, and/or cellular backup.
Comcast equipment may have the only device that is "code approved, or at least in the pipe to be approved."
