Re: [PLUG] Ubuntu linux + a new mobile phone

I shouldn't be surprised at how helpful and knowledgeable this list is. On this subject, I would like to point out an extremely helpful resource I've come across for Android devices, that allows Samba sharing from the device. (Use the SMB module for the Astro file manager, available in the Market, to access Samba shares from your Android device.) It requires a rooted device and is still in beta: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8239139&postcount=128

Sorry to hijack a thread, but I thought it might be useful information. I'm very happy to know about the BitPim tool, myself, in case I can recommend that in the future.

First, make sure you have the phone itself set to the correct USB setting. My Sony has a menu item allowing me to set the USB connect mode as a simple drive, music player, or modem. (The last is what bitpim expects for mine to work.)

Here's a forum post that may be useful:

Bitpim should work but as it says in the post you may have to juggle the ports manually to find it.

If that still fails, you should get the hex device id from lsusb and see whether there's any advice at linux-USB.org.
