First, make sure you have the phone itself set to the correct USB setting. My Sony has a menu item allowing me to set the USB connect mode as a simple drive, music player, or modem. (The last is what bitpim expects for mine to work.)

Bitpim should work but as it says in the post you may have to juggle the ports manually to find it.
If that still fails, you should get the hex device id from lsusb and see whether there's any advice at linux-USB.org.
