[PLUG] why apple- the kids decision

thanks to all for an informative discussion.
pros and cons are clearly delineated.

it will probably come down to, "because i want one- many friends and people at work ( she works at Phila Chamber of Commerce ) have macs" AND " i am willing to pay the higher prices "
is 4gb mem the "current" spec?

does the purchase include hardware/software support?
if so, how long?
how much after that?

thanks

Hello Ron,

I made the switch from Linux (Ubuntu) on a Thinkpad to a Macbook Pro about 2 years ago.  I have been in systems/programming for 15+ years and know Linux very well.  It took me a little while to get used to doing things Apple's way but I found out that Macs are very well set up for technical work and if you accept their way of doing things work very well indeed.  Apple is a master at building user interfaces: they are coherent, simple and powerful.

iTunes is surprisingly good in combination with an iPhone: I podcast extensively.  Apple Mail is hands down the best mail client I've ever used and I do email consulting for a living.  The Apple Terminal app kills any terminal I've ever used on Linux (or Windows).  The display on apple computers (laptops and desktops) are high quality by default--brighter and crisper than and PC I've worked with.  You can't beat how smoothly they sleep/wake.  I'm out of the loop but Ubuntu used to only wake up about 1/2 the time on my Thinkpad.

I am defacto IT support for everyone in my life and since I switched the receptive ones to Mac I hear little but praise for their mac from them.  My mother even has an iPhone and loves it.  I don't know anyone using windows who hasn't brought me their PC at some point to clear off spyware.

I won't defend Apple's practices but I do firmly believe anyone, technical or not, who's anti-Mac just hasn't really tried using one..  They work very well and generally are much less trouble than other computers.  The amazing thing is this is true both for highly technical users and for non-technical users.  With most things I say leave your politics at the door and pick what works best for you.  All big corporations do evil things.

You're kidding yourself if you think a non-technical user is going to use Linux and Microsoft is no different from Apple in their practices.. the difference is Apple makes a more pleasant, better thought-out product.  It is more expensive but isn't quality generally more expensive?

Let us know what she decides.
