Tried qjackctl?

Yessir - came with Jack.
Connections appear ok (I believe they are set up by Rakarrack).
The only odd message in the log was that it couldn't lock memory.

And Pulseaudio will not die, if that's important.

If I had to guess -- I would say it's definitely pulseaudio.  For some reason when I was trying to set up jack, pulseaudio would relinquish control, and I had to end up killing it (I don't remember if I uninstalled it).  andother option would be too run 'alsamixer'.  if the card/usb you are trying to use is active, it's prob pulseaudio causing the problem.
Experiment repeated with different laptop, same results, except it sounded like it was actually taking input from the onboard mic (which wasn't turned on anywhere).

Thanks for the suggestion.
