It is true the example was using nfs, but I tried both nfs and smbfs and get
basically the same error as both are enabled. Here is the exports file:

/var/lib/mythtv/recordings    *(ro,async,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
/var/lib/mythtv/videos    *(ro,async,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
/var/lib/mythtv/music    *(ro,async,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)
/var/lib/mythtv/pictures    *(ro,async,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check)

It's not samba. Note the "-t nfs". He's performing NFS mounts.

Please post your /etc/exports from the server that's doing the file serving.
