This is incorrect, of sorts.

If you have the boot_wait enabled (not needed for some models), the
router should "listen" for ANY firmware flash attempt via ftp for a
certain window of seconds. not all models do, but just about any linksys
(and definitely a wrt54gs) does.

(i've done a lot of openwrt flashing. have you bricked one yet? that's
always fun.)
