[PLUG] Weird drive quantum states

A number of times I have been copying things to a usb drive and the 
drive simply unmounts itself (or just plain disappears, if you'd 
prefer).  No form of cajoling seems to reattach it, even though dmesg 
indicates it is mounted.

Just the other day I was backing up, like a good computer person should, 
and an external drive not only disappeared, but now only provides read 
errors (uh-oh).

What makes drives go away during use?
