Re: [PLUG] dell xps 14z

I see problems with Asus were mentioned, so I thought I'd share my experience. I was considering buying the Dell xps 14z, but instead I just bought an ASUS U46-BAL6 with Intel Core i7 because it has almost the same specs than the $1299 xps 14z and is much cheaper ($799).

I couldn't boot any GNU/Linux liveCD with it though. I had to use acpi=off as a boot option in grub to install it (installed Debian Testing and Ubuntu 11.10). It turns out in the end disabling VT-d in the BIOS fixes the issue. Not sure the side effects from turning it off. Otherwise it's a great 14" laptop and pretty light.

FWIW, some people have no choice but to have some access to Windows to run some necessary program or another. For me, it's various stats and office packages for my MSIS program; it may be something similar for Sonny. So, for me, a dual boot configuration- Windows 7 + Fedora- works perfectly.

Incidentally, Sonny, what problems were you having installing linux on your Asus computer? My notebook is an Asus A53E, and it's had very few problems with linux, only with the wireless mobile device from Sprint. All I had to do was install one quick fix for power management, and this notebook works brilliantly in linux.
