couple things to try.

first, /etc/init.d/sshd status
to confirm it didn't segfault.

if that's not the case, reply and include the output of (on the netbook):

iptables -L -n

ifconfig|grep -B 2 inet|awk '{print $1"\t"$2}'|egrep -v
'(inet6|LOOPBACK|127.0.0.1)'|egrep [0-9A-Za-z]|sed -e 's/inet//g'

and the contents of /etc/ssh/sshd_config

lastly, a traceroute (from the desktop) to the IP address(es) in the
above ifconfig.

additionally, (from the desktop) an:

ssh -vv (<user@>)<IP address of netbook, see ifconfig)

would help as well.
