Been using Xubuntu 64 for quite a while. No complaints. I use the`forbidden' multimedia stuff too.

Be sure of which interface you'd like. My opinion is that Unity suckseggs. Ymmv.

I updated two machines with no issues. Two problem children causedproblems but I suspect it's not 12.04's fault.
