I've disliked unity since they put it on the netbook edition.
If you liked KDE 3.5, but switched to gnome with the release of KDE 4,
you should give Kubuntu, with KDE 4.7, a try. Quite stable, and no
unity.
Works well on the aforementioned netbooks, too.
