I've used a kindle on the beach and it works pretty well.  Sure, if
you are angling it just perfectly to catch the sun you probably will
strain to read it, but you won't get the laser-beam-of-death in your
eye like you will with a glossy cell phone display.

I would say that matte e-ink displays are fairly comparable to paper,
so if paper isn't going to be practical then the display won't be
either.  It isn't better than paper or anything like that.
