Re: [PLUG] AWS info

Doug,

Yeah, a micro instance should do fine, except I don't know about
the asterisk stuff. I have no feel for that data load. However, it is
easy to configure a micro instance at first, then convert it to
something larger if/when necessary.

Yes, you still need a connection at home, but now any residential
package will do. No need for fast up speed, right to run a server,
fixed IP address, no blocked ports, etc. That used to make it much
cheaper ($50/month in 2000 or so vs $160/month for 384K/384K
DSL). I later got my price down to $120/month for 768K/768K DSL,
but in 2009, AWS was much cheaper at $35/month or so, and the
price has dropped a couple times since. At the time, I had my server
at a separate physical location, so I was able to drop the DSL entirely,
unrelated to my residential service at home, so it was a big savings
for me.

Fred,

Thanks for the links. Great info.

I have about 8-10 virtual domains that get fairly low, by todays
standards, usage. No databases or other complexity. I may also want to run
sendmail and some voip (asterisk) Do you think a micro instance would
suffice?

I certainly can see the advantage in doing it this way as you pointed out
in your blog BUT one still needs an internet connection to get to it and I
will have to decide what that will be. You almost always end up with some
bundled package. Since DSL even from Verizon is going away in FIOS areas
the only choice is FIOS or Xfinity (Comcast). I currently have Direct TV
and I like it but getting just Internet (if you can get it) from Verizon
or Comcast is not very cost effective.

Doug,

You may want to read the " Manage Your AWS Billing" tip at
my Cloud Computing tips page:
      http://bristle.com/Tips/CloudComputing.htm#aws_manage_billing

Yes, there's a price list, and a calculator. Also, once you start using
AWS, you can check your current bill (to within 5 hours or so) at any
time, and can even set up billing alerts to notify you if the current
bill exceeds a threshold.

My typical charges for a "small" instance (after prepaying about
$10/month for a 3 year "reserved instance") are about $25/month.
More info at:
      http://bristle.com/Tips/CloudComputing.htm#aws_intro
      http://bristle.com/Tips/CloudComputing.htm#aws_reserve_instance

You may only need a "micro" instance, which is less than $15/month,
and the first year is free. More info at:
      http://bristle.com/Tips/CloudComputing.htm#aws_spot_and_micro_instances

All of these tips were mailed to my Cloud Computing mailing list
before they were archived at my Web site. Let me know if you want
to be added to it or any of my other mailing lists:

I looked at the Amazon web services site and there are a wealth of
services. The signup is free but how do you determine monthly costs beofre
you sign up based on your needs? Is there a way to build and price a
system without actually commiting to establish it?

If anyone has done that perhaps you could give a description of wehatg you
setup and how much it costs.
