You'd want to use the "ls" command on the command line.  (I have no
idea how one would go about checking this from a GUI.)

I'm not a noob... I prob. work more @ the command line than in the GUI.

As it is, I took another look at the command line and found that my Desktop directory was gone (must have fat-finger deleted it). Restored that; will see if that makes a difference when I get home from work.
