Yes, I"ve seen this before. When the encrypted and locked, even

fdisk can't see the drive.

There is some window of 20 seconds after power up that you can

wipe the drive with a normal dumb motherboard.

But the thinkpad has a TPM chip and tried to unlock the drive on

powerup, and fails for unknown reasons, so you can't even

get to the BIOS setup, until you remove the encryted drive.

The thinkpad BIOS encrypted the drive, so it must be bug or something.

Are you saying that the disk doesn't even show up as a block device?

I seem to remember in the past, that you can sleep the computer, plug
in the SSD, wake it, and now your running Linux with the SSD attached.
HDparm can now see the SSD, but hdparm --security-erase NULL /dev/sdb
doesn't work , just says "input/output error"
