There are potentially several bugs mixed in various discussion threads
threads around the net. There is a recent fix for a confirmed data
corruption issue we found in the course of GT.M development, and worked
with developers at one of our Linux distributions to narrow down. A
description of that bug, and its fix, can be found by searching for
d2dc317d564a46dfc683978a2e5a4f91434e9711
at https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v4.x/ChangeLog-4.0.3
If your application is not using fallocate or one of its friends, you don't
need to fear this bug (which evidently goes at least as far back as the
3.10 kernels). This bug is independent of RAID configuration - it showed
up with a database on a PCIe SSD drive - but at least on our workload
needed fast IO to reproduce reliably. Also, this bug does not affect xfs.

I think the bigger issue here is QA in general, and less so the details.
People point to Heartbleed and say "what if nobody compiled in that
heartbeat function that nobody uses anyway?"
Anytime there is a bug that is triggered by specific circumstances
people are going to argue "if only." The problem is that when the
next bug comes along which is mitigated by those circumstances then
you don't hear them chiming in so loudly. :)
That said, there is something to be said for avoiding exotic
configurations (says the guy who runs Gentoo). The closer you are to
mainstream, the more likely you are going to be covered by various QA
systems that discover problems before you do.
However, ext4 on mdadm is hardly an exotic configuration. A big
problem here is that despite the whole many-eyes argument, I don't
think there are really that many organizations doing serious
regression testing of key kernel facilities like filesystems. Bugs
creep into even stable branches of the kernel, as I've experienced
recently with btrfs, and as we're seeing here with ext4.
You're probably safer with something like RHEL with its very long-term
kernels, as long as you don't expect it to work with any piece of
hardware made in the last two years and you stick to cutting-edge
filesystems like ext3. :)

There's more, some still to-be-determined.
Tape Drive: Overland Storage Powerloader (SDLT320-LXML-115RB)
older servers:
1x Penguin Computing Relion 230
2x Penguin Computing Relion 101
2x Penguin Computing Altus 600
3x Server UPS: SmartUPS 3000XL
A big pile of cat-5 cables (one "pile" is literally a trash can packed full).
Quite a few 5-port switches (mostly cisco desktop I think)
Spare keyboards
A couple of Mac G4s
There might be some older desktop units.
A pile of desktop UPSs, which may or may not have working batteries
Probably some variety of LCD monitors
As it's official now, work is shutting down the business, so anything not wanted by anyone in-house is likely to get trashed if not found a new home.
So there may be a few more things for the list. I won't know until possibly early next week (our IT guy is staying on for transitioning).
I'll put names on things and work out how to arrange pickup.

I'm interested in at least one UPS.

Are the Altus 600's still available, and is all hardware in place?
Thanks,
