Major Hayden at Rackspace has written up a bunch of reviews on various laptops he’s used with Linux; from MacBooks, Dells and Lenovos. He’s gone back and forth on a few different ones, but currently using the Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd gen:
If you just enter something like “laptop” into his blog’s search field, you’ll see his past reviews on other hardware.

I really love my IBM/Lenovo X60T (tablet-drawingpad/laptop convertible), and low-end chromebooks are very competitively priced coming with ChromeOS (looks to me like a Googly stripped down version of Gentoo but you can change this)On the Lenovo route, I found thinkwiki.org very helpful. If money is no object, check out emperorlinux.com, but everything they sell can be had much cheaper.
