Re: [PLUG] OT: Unlocked Cell Phones

[This might be a tangent since it's mostly about service instead of phones]

Regarding the two competing networks, if you look into Ting you can actually mix networks on your plan.

We live in an area where GSM (T-Mobile) signals are weak, and switched to CDMA (Sprint) devices. Our bill dropped from $140 a month for 2 T-Mobile devices unlimited to $50 for a la carte for 2 Ting/Sprint devices. SMS is cheap and data is expensive. We try to limit our data usage or use wifi. You can BYOD or buy a new device through their online store. I'm not sure what the unlocked options are currently, but they often list Nexus devices.

I'm planning to replace my smartphone, and I want to get one that is unlocked.

AS far as I know the only potential pitfalls to purchasing my own unlocked
phone are compatibility with the 2 competing network standards, and a
potential lack of warranty for some unlocked phones (at least, for the android
ones sold by Amazon)

Are there other issues I should be aware of before spending $300 - $500 for a
new phone?
