Re: [PLUG] recommendation for good wireless router?

Those look lovely, but I'm far too cheapskate to drop 300$ per AP.

I personally have an interest in some of the networking equipment from https://www.ubnt.com/ and I think it may be my next upgrade but haven't had the time to look into it deeply.

Just pay attention to what model you end up choosing, I bought a pair of Asus RT-1200ACs at Microcenter on a whim, got home, and then found out they have all fast ethernet ports.

100Mbps wired ports on a 866Mbps wireless router.

Went back and got two refurb Linksys EA6500 units, got home, found out they have 64KB nvram, but writing more than 32KB to them results in a nvram reset. DD-WRT fills something like 30-31KB by default.

I could have worked around it, but got fed up, returned for refund, and went back to my existing WRT600N+E3000 setup. Depending on your feelings about Google, I've gotten very, very positive reports about the Google Hub/OnHub/Google On units. They're super-minimal, nearly zero configurables, but they work well out of the box and are great, IMO, for relatives/friends that you support but you don't want to support often.

When I bought mine years ago, it wasn't an option because it was a dual processor unit. Well then... My router is now more appealing.

Not that it runs dd-wrt or tomato, it just runs and I haven't had a single problem with it are the Asus routers. The modern equivalent to mine is the AC-66U. There probably are better out there but for how well it works and the features, I couldn't be happier.

I have to replace my old wireless unit, a Linksys box running Tomato.
It's starting to "flake out" every few days and must be rebooted.

Who has a favorite to recommend?

I am partial to Tomato as it's stone simple to set up but I'm perfectly
willing to switch to another firmware if I have to.

Thanks
Eric
