I've cloned installs to other machines via dd installs as well. I've used the method OP mentions (gparted to resize all the partitions smaller than the SSD target, then dd to copy) many times, and recommend it. It's reliable and simple.

I was under the impression that Clonezilla copies only files, not blank
space, so you *could* use Clonezilla.

You don't state whether this disk is your boot drive. Makes a big
difference, as you need to do more steps if it's a boot drive.
