Someone should really make a self-hosted modern chat app like slack or hipchat. Slack itself is based on electron (http://electron.atom.io/) which is essentially chrome for desktop apps. I imagine XMPP/ IRC could be used under the hood. Set your own AWS keys and a bucket for attachments. Wish I had the development chops to take on something like that. I bet it'd be popular. I did just find Rocket.chat. https://rocket.chat/features Looks pretty impressive and you can self host which is yuge.
