We formerly used IRC and work but switched to slack.  Zero config - just load the client, sign in, and go.  Also, it handles things like emojis and inline photos.

I prefer IRC but I don't have any strong negatives against slack (other than, as you point out, privacy.)

Basically, it's a way to get you to turn over all your company's internal communications and data to the people behind the Slack site?

(Privacy issues aside:  is it that great?  How is it better than some combination of chat + email?)
