For anyone who is repurposing old computers, I recommend you look into
Q4OS as the operating system. It is amazingly responsive in VMWare with
2 cores of an early Core i3 and 2 GB RAM, and is built on Debian stable.
The desktop is Trinity, with LXQT as an option in the next version
(whenever Debian 9 comes out of testing).
The minus as a consumer desktop is the lack of the Ubuntu repositories.
