Re: [PLUG] Webroot

I agree, I don't believe in treating users the way they do. To some extent we have no privacy anymore. The way I see Facebook phishing is in this way: you will see something that says answer the following 20 things for fun. They are mostly things that are not need to be known by others on your friend list. For example put a number after the following: 1. Marriages 2. Divorces 3. Children 4. Current car 5. Favorite vacation spot, etc. How many states have you been to? These can be fun to fill out with friends, but I understand what is really going on. There is a high level of apathy with this among Facebook users I know. I tell them, and they could care less. I'm not sure if Google or Yahoo phish under the guise of sharing personal stuff with others, but that is a big Facebook thing.

I know what you mean about deleting your Facebook account, I've been there. The delete process is that your account goes to an inactive state, and they after 14 days, the account is deleted. The thing is, most people after a few days are wondering how Bob is doing with his new whatever, and they log back in cancelling the deletion process lol.

Facebook has a poor rating with a lot of people that I know. I got on Facebook when it first came out in what 2004? My Marine friends where the reason I used Facebook. These guys are all over the country and/or world, and it is nice to keep up with them. That novelty wore off a very very long time ago for me. Facebook went from sharing your vacation pics with family to an opinion box. It's constant negativity. People complaining about the social issue and that social issue. If it's not opinions it's a lot of passive aggressive behavior. For example, I have something to say about <insert name here>, but I don't want to say it to them directly. I'll put this meme out there in the hopes this person gets the message. That shit kills, I can't take it lol.

They have a tracking site that you could go to and opt out of the tracking, but I forget the URL. Plus being a programmer, how do I trust they really opted me out? Did a script just tell me I'm out, but I'm really not?

On Microsoft, I tried to get my father-in-law to switch to Linux for his small business. The main problem they were having is the office folks were downloading stuff left and right. There was malware out the ying yang. I put Ubuntu on a computer, and I showed them that Libre Office would open their Microsoft docs. Well the formatting was a tad off. They had fit. That was unacceptable. I was ok, it's your money. You have to buy a Windows OS and purchase Office now. Again apathy. A lot of folks just don't care. On general principle, I refuse to pay for that software lol. unreal man

That said, I'm not sure if you can distinguish what Facebook does from what Google, Yahoo and Microsoft do.  With Google and Yahoo this might even be more widespread but at least there is a  way to not be tracked (op-out or go private in your browser).  Maybe that is the difference.  With Microsoft, we're back to the problem with people using the thingy that everyone else uses even if it is a bad idea.

Yes, I do believe using Facebook and Microsoft stuff is a bad idea

I'm not 100% against companies engaging with users to emerge the best way to advertise to them but it really should be up to the customer how that is done otherwise people are going to go elsewhere.  Companies like FB and MS want people to feel like they don't have a choice so that they can do what they want but here at PLUG we know there is always a choice.

There is no doubt in my mind that Facebook, is a phishing site. I can’t prove this, but I know Facebook aggregates large amounts of data on their users. For example this is how I would phish users, these tell me 40 things about Ron (does he like this or that) gives me a more 360 view of you. This leads to better marketing of products and services to that user. I put my tin foil hat on, and I have a sneaky suspicion that these posts on Facebook are plants.

Webroot Antivirus 'mistakenly' flags Windows as malware and FB as a

phishing site.

Not sure why they said mistakenly...
