Re: [PLUG] Open Source Whole House Audio Streaming Alternatives to Sonos, Chromecast

Between the Chromecast and Mediatomb I can stream music or video to every screen or DLNA device on my net or off net via VPN and using something like Kodi. For just music I tend to use my phone and stream to my bluetooth speaker.

Now... if you want to have EVERY speaker in your house streaming the same thing then you can do that with RPi's with USB audio outs or whatever and slave them to a multicast address that your media player is sending to. I've done this with ffmpeg and mplayer.

shoutcast[0] is actually just a proprietary implementation of icecast[1]
- or rather, the icecast protocol[2]. you can even stream (or listen) to
icecast with vlc[3].
