Re: [PLUG] Copying files from unbootable machine

Glad to hear it! If you want to use a GUI, after you sudo you can always launch the filemanager :D

KP, et al,

Yea, wasn't thinking about the command line because of the number of folders involved, but did get that to work.

Thanks,
Eric

Before you tried to copy the files, did you "sudo su" or something similar? The Live CD user is not root.

Hi all,

I have some important files I need to copy off of an Ubuntu machine that does not boot. I booted Ubuntu 16.04 from a thumb drive, and can access the file system on hard drive which does not boot, but I am not able to copy those files off to another thumb drive for example. It tells me I am not the owner. The drive is not encrypted.

I see from searching that options include remounting the drive and changing ownership, but did not see a circumstance exactly like mine. What is the easiest way to gain ownership and copy off these files?

Thanks,
Eric
