Oh...without switching.  You could setup a DNS server for your local network, and to redirect the domain name of your IMAP server to it's IP on the local network (10.1.10.SOMETHING on Comcast as far as I know).  This would require your IMAP server to have a registered domain name.

Are you saying that it worked without having to switch the IP with the old modem?

it was working before. I use my home linux box as an IMAP server for
my laptop and apple devices. I'd like to be able to use the external
IP address for the IMAP server instead of having to switch back and
forth when I'm home or out. So using that address range doesn't really
help me.
