[PLUG] [plug-announce] Wed Mar 7 - PLUG Central - "The Theory and Practice of Stargates" by John Ashmead (7pm at USP)

------------------ PLEASE NOTE ------------------
If the doors to Griffith Hall are locked, USP
security will let you into the building if you
call them. Please see below in this message for
full instructions.

PLUG Central will be meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at USP in
Philadelphia, beginning at 7pm. Directions to the meeting location
at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia can be found at
the end of this email.

This month, PLUG welcomes John Ashmead with a talk that's a bit
of a change of pace: "The Theory and Practice of Stargates".

Call them Stargates, Jumpgates, Fargates, Hypergates or just an
invitation to every pest from the far reaches of the Galaxy to
visit, they would be invaluable in helping mankind break free
of this solar system. Are StarGates only a convenient plot
device -- or could they actually be built? Accordingly to
Einstein's Theory of General Relavity, they are possible -- at
least in principle. We will discuss how to glue black holes
together to build a wormhole, how to avoid the dangers of
spaghettification, radiation poisoning and paradox noise, and
just what would it take to build one in practice.

John has previously given a version of this talk at FOSSCON, and
it should be a great time. We hope to see you there!

There will be an open Question & Answer session at 7PM, prior to
the main presentation at 8PM. This is an open meeting; all are
welcome and encouraged to attend.

Usually, a number of members get together after the meeting at a
nearby restaurant for food and perhaps a beer or two. Come join
the camaraderie!
