[PLUG] Why were smbmount + smbfs deprecated?

Pardon me if this has been discussed previously- although a search through the archives didn't show it. But, why were the command smbmount and the smbfs filetype (for use in the mount command) deprecated in favour of the cifs-mount command and the cifs filetype? The replacement seem to be rather less intuitive than the former.
