Re: [PLUG] Oooma Home VOIP Phone

I used to use an obitalk to connect up to Google Voice to do VoIP at home, but that was a while ago so I can't speak to how it is as a service now. At the time, it worked well, had a decent amount of customization that you could do on the box itself, different ring settings, that type of thing. Recently went with a Ooma as I needed a home phone with 911 service. Overall, I'm very pleased with it, though I don't really use it that much. My main concern was to have 911 service at the house for instances where people watching our kids forgot their cell phone or similar. Most of the time it sits there, acting as my nth tier of on call notification and the grandparents call it then the kids have fun picking up a phone. As for Vonage, I used that a long time ago as well, so I can't give you apples to apples. Ooma is reliable, good call quality, easy setup, and nice feature set for something like $6/month.

If you're interested in rolling your own solution, voip.ms has some very affordable services. All you need is a supported voip phone, or, if you want to get fancy, an in-home PBX.

I use the latter, running a freePBX instance with a voip.ms trunk. It's 99 cents per DID and 1 cent a minute.

I've been using vonage for years, but am looking at other lower-cost
systems.   The Ooma seems good, but am wondering if anyone on the list
can relate their experiences with VOIP providers.

TIA!
