Re: [PLUG] Linux friendly camera system

You don’t do security on wireless just because it’s less secure? I get that.

For me I have power in a lot more places than I have ethernet: this is a 100+ year old house with a variety of additions of a variety of ages: I had the foresight to run ethernet during the renovation but only to outlets not put through walls to server exterior cameras. I can pull power from outdoor fixtures and the like much more easily than I can pull ethernet from the basement. I hear what you’re saying though: PoE makes a ton of sense if the effort to pull it is equal or less than getting power there.

For modern wireless networks (though I suspect, other than us technical folks, most people do not have a robust wireless home net) I would agree in theory. From the build point of view, unless you're doing a truly stand alone camera drop, you still need power. I'd much rather pull network cable than electrical cable :D

At the moment I’m thinking of using the cloud for exterior cameras since it’s essentially what you can see from the street anyway and if I do install interior cameras use an in-home dvr for those. We have a big house so will probably need 5 exterior cameras to cover everything which is the limit of yi’s basic cloud service anyway.

In my case I don't want anything cloud related but this system can do that or run the cameras in stand alone mode. That is important since even though the cameras are not ONVIF compliant, they can still present a rtsp url which motion can use via my Pi or better yet, a more robust device like one of my fitlet NAS build.

From the reading I did this is an awesome time to be playing with cameras: it seems like for all but the most specialized of needs a $40-$100 consumer grade camera has awesome features and with some exceptions all are standards compliant and plug right into the free Mac/PC/Linux DVRs
>>

More important though they seem to have the most polished and affordable cloud service which realistically makes the most sense for us. My wife is non-technical so I’d like a plug and play app and I don’t have the time/energy to start another project. A friend who’s very smart but not technical has a pair in his house and likes them very much.
