Walt, that's my thinking too.  Even as FOSSCON the room you were in and the hall where the keynote was 30'  is about just about the entire stage.  Plus you really can't wander in the main hall because of the mic.

I have two things coming up- one where I know the venue (and 30 ft is plenty) and another one where I have no idea.  30ft is still a comfortable work space.

I guess it depends on where you're expecting to use it. You'd need a
pretty big stage for 30 feet to be a problem. I think it would be fine
at all the PLUG venues, and all the FOSSCON rooms with the possible
exception of the main auditorium.
