[PLUG] Puzzling openssh problem

On a Debian Stable system, I installed (via pinning) golang and clang from Testing which together brought in a bunch of new packages. I have a really puzzling problem now in that ssh localhost does not work (it says Connection closed by port 22), but telnet localhost 22 says:

Trying ::1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.9p1 Debian-10+deb10u2

(and after a while, the daemon closes the connection)

Any ideas as to what could be wrong? I am not even sure where to look. Thank you.
