Re: [PLUG] CentOS |
Earlier this year it was announced that Scientific Linux was being discontinued in favor of CentOS. I'm not sure how this new CentOS situation will influence that. It has also been announced the new Rocky Linux would be a community driven replacement for CentOS. CentOS had a lot of institutional support. Several big companies were using it. So I expect that Rocky Linux or some other distro will fill the vacuum. Bit tech companies have a bad history of continuing support for free software. They only look at the bottom line. So I expect it was predictable that this would happen. One of the great things about OSS is that if there is enough demand, the development will continue. Walt, Ha, sorry! Yes, I meant the email to go to list. Scientific Linux I think is popular in Europe, and I am pretty sure CERN used it for their systems. I remember hearing a podcast in 2013 where they were using OpenStack and Puppet to deliver systems to scientist within five minutes, where before it would take six months. i.e. PO, purchase, electricians, rack and stack, install, securitize, test, deliver.
