Re: [PLUG] CentOS

Springdale Linux (http://springdale.math.ias.edu/) seems to be an alternative to CentOS / Scientific Linux. And it's nearby – people on this list likely know some of the people involved in the project.

Earlier this year it was announced that Scientific Linux was being
discontinued in favor of CentOS. I'm not sure how this new CentOS
situation will influence that.

It has also been announced the new Rocky Linux would be a community
driven replacement for CentOS.

CentOS had a lot of institutional support. Several big companies were
using it. So I expect that Rocky Linux or some other distro will fill
the vacuum.

Bit tech companies have a bad history of continuing support for free
software. They only look at the bottom line. So I expect it was
predictable that this would happen.

One of the great things about OSS is that if there is enough demand, the
development will continue.
