Re: [PLUG] Dispose of old hard drives

So I'm guessing a that "securely destroyed" does not include "giving them to your friends and family and making them promise not to tell"?  <grin>

Yes Joe - but in some cases it is not my data but old customer data - I told them it would be securely destroyed... and it has/will be!

I'm beginning to get the idea that the destruction of your hard drive(s) is unrelated to the possible data left on the drive.

Thank you John

Strong magnets have already been employed.
Drills, punches, LASERS (proper spelling), etc have been considered and all have been rejected as being too labor intensive.

Thermite... now there is an option!
If I make a youtube video of it the cost may be way more than offset... but we'll see :grinning:

You can get creative or crazy in your rigor to destroy them. I usually pass a strong magnet over the drive and give the drive a hole in the area where the platters are straight through, either using a hardened steel punch or a benchtop drill press. Some will argue that isn't enough. It's enough to deter most people. ymmv

I've also taken to using platters from wiped drives to make artwork.

Greetings PLUG-ers.

I have about 30 (+|-) hard drives that are either wiped or "can't be wiped" IE: "destroy".
Do you have any favorite drive disposal companies and/or processes?
I filled out a web form for a company that does this, however they wanted to know how many "paper boxes" of drive I had...
No response to my  <1 answer.

Thanks,
Eric Lucas

PS: I took some of them apart and now have a stack of shiny metal "platters". My propane torch and I know how to deal with those :-D
