Re: [PLUG] OT - Cheap Home VOIP Phone Service

I have two Oomas at different places. They work really well and I like them a lot. I don't have a home phone, so if I'm gone and someone's home with my kids, they have a phone they can use for 911. Ooma can also be used as a hub for their security system, just an extra bonus. The calls are clear, I get very little or zero spam calls on either number. Their premium/paid tier is almost worth it if I didn't already have a cell phone. Various call blocking, forwarding, ringing your cell phone via their app, are all nice things, but not something I'd use all the time.

Both Oomas have been 100% set it and forget it. There hasn't been anything for me to update or maintain, they just work.

I want to get a "landline" for home.  I don't want to give out my cell
phone number unless absolutely necessary.   I therefore thought I'd get
a cheap VOIP service as a "trash" number.  I don't need to port an
existing phone number, and I naturally don't want to pay much.

I've seen Ooma, which requires a $80 box and then costs bout $4/month
for taxes and fees.  Anybody try one of these?  Any other suggestions?

TIA!
