Re: [PLUG] Digital Video Transfer from Legacy "Digital" Camcorder

The Hi8 tapes stored digital as "Digital8" (Sony's term) at about half of the tape's capacity.  I had a similar camcorder (different model, maybe 110?) and successfully transferred all my old tapes off of it years ago.  Doing so on that model required an ieee 1394 "firewire" connection.  I happened to have a very old firewire PC card and had  to dig up an old enough machine to plug it into.  I couldn't find linux drivers that would support it but I managed to get Windows running to pull video off - maybe using "windows movie maker"?  I'm not 100% sure about which application I used.

Hope this helps.

The legacy camcorder: A Sony TRV280 from about 2009. It's labeled
"Digital" and has a USB port labeled "DV". The tape format is
something called Hi8.

The question: How to transfer the Hi8 tapes to MP4 or something like that?
Alternate question: Is it just easier and cheaper to use a service?
We're talking about 12 tapes total.

If the answer to the second question is NO, how would I go about
mounting this thing? If I need an intermediate device between the
camcorder and the computer, any recommendations?

Thanks in advance. Any advice at all is most welcome.
