Anybody have a recommendation for a VPN?

Protonmail, the privacy-minded Swiss email provider, now offers ProtonVPN clients for most OSes/platforms. The free version gives you handful of endpoints in the USA, Netherlands, and Japan. A paid version gives you more options.

As you stated it should be "PART" of your strategy. A "VPN" in this definition is really just a network "wormhole". Its protecting you against ISP/Hotspot data collection, but it doesn't protect you against client fingerprinting (browser signature/3rd party cookies, etc). Also, if I was an entity that wanted to snoop interesting data-  traffic that exits a VPN endpoint would be high value.
