Hi Walt,
I'm sorry to hear about your sys upgrade problems.
I noticed you were out of disk space and the upgrade failed.
What size of hard drive do you have as the boot drive? You should have a
minimum of a 1 TB drive for everything is getting more blotted as time goes on.
I had a problem like this a long time ago and I had to do a fresh install.
Thankfully my backup includes all of my currently installed packages.
It has been awhile since I have used Debian but if you have a file that was
created with:
dpkg --get-selections > filename.txt
You could use:
dpkg --set-selections < filename.txt
