[PLUG] SOLVED!: Throughput Reduction thru Router |
Who'd a thunk it?! The network cable was bad. I replaced the
cable and immediately got 325 Mbps, as it should be. (I had been
using a different, shorter cable when I used my comcast router.)
Here's what I learned in more investigation:
I've had this cable for ages, and never noticed anything before. I suppose it was fine in the old 100 Mbps days, but woefully inadequate for gigabit ethernet.
Thanks to all for the suggestions!
The only two items that come to mind immediately for me based on past experience....
1. MTU... in the past Comcast was assigning my router an MTU of 576 as opposed to 1500. This caused MUCH more severe throughput/latency issues for me than what you're seeing though. Not sure how much visibility you have into seeing what the MTU is that you're getting on the WAN side on that thing.
2. Flakey CAT 5/6 cable(s)
I hope that helps....

I recently ditched my Comcast xfinity wireless router and purchased my
own cable modem. (I didn't like all the info that the comcast router
might be gathering, plus it broadcast hidden SSID's on a channel I
wanted to use.)
Hooked directly to my new cable modem, I can get 350 MBPS, which
slightly exceeds my contracted 300 MBPS connection rate. However, when
I plug in my brand new router (to translate the cable modems address of
74.xxx.xxx.xxx to 192.168.1.1), I'm only getting around 95 MBPS.
It doesn't seem reasonable to me that the brand new router
(https://www.newegg.com/tp-link-tl-r605/p/0E6-002W-006W7?Item=9SIA7ABJSG5198)
would choke the throughput so much.
I've turned off all the "extra" features of the router, but this had no
impact.
Anybody got any comments, ideas, or suggestions?
TIA!
