I can't recall where I learned this, but professionals in
exacting-needs circumstances don't even trust expensive "quality"
brands because batches come out with varying-quality results. I was
told they have tens of thousands of dollars worth of testing equipment
used for every single length before installation.

(I don't understand why they can't just use a random laptop at both
ends, and do some cool testing I don't understand, but that's not my
field.)

I'd guess that all it takes is that one crimp that one time when you
closed a door on it but it worked okay so no harm done, plus a little
age and bending and things become more erratic than internal error
checking can reasonably handle.

I'm sure things get fun when you use flat cables! :)
