[PLUG] [plug-announce] Tue Nov 14 - PLUG North - "The Open Source Renaissance in Mainframe Technology" by Elizabeth Joseph (7pm at CoreDial)

PLUG North will be meeting on Tuesday, November 14 at CoreDial's offices in Blue Bell, beginning at 6:45 pm. Directions to the meeting location can be found at the end of this email.

This month, PLUG welcomes back Elizabeth Joseph, who will be giving a talk entitled "The Open Source Renaissance in Mainframe Technology". Lyz is the Global Head of the Open Source Program Office for IBM zSystems where she works with the community to explore open source workloads on mainframes.

Historically speaking, open source has been woven into the culture of mainframes since their inception, with organizations meeting to collaborate on source code as far back as the 1950s. These communities have continued to collaborate through the decades since then, but with the rise of proprietary software and changing of the industry, the importance of open source software waned somewhat. In 2015 the renaissance of open source in the mainframe began with the launch of the Open Mainframe Project. This presentation will discuss the success of the Open Mainframe Project and explore the ecosystem of modern open source software available for the mainframe, from bash and git on IBM z/OS Unix System Services to Kubernetes on Linux for the IBM Z architecture.

The meeting will take place from 6:45-9pm at CoreDial's office space in Blue Bell, PA.
