Ouch! The return of 1976. Maybe get a WATS line? :-)
Can't you put a computer with some special daughter cards, running
Linux, between your twisted pair and your phones in order to implement
a "Press 1 to speak to a human" type situation?
I know this doesn't fix the issue with porting a phone number, so I
guess this is kind of a separate but related question.
