Make sure that the bios is set to boot off of the floppy and then try booting your machine with a Linux boot disk. Some laptop bios won't allow you to boot off the floppy though. I ran into an old thinkpad that wouldn't allow a floppy boot except for a ms OS. I almost pulled out all of my remaining hair over this!
