I only have one hard drive trick. Twice I've had a disk in a machine that I normally kept powered up all the time. I then turned off the machine for an extended period of time (once for a vacation, the other over the Xmas holidays). When I turned it back on the machine wouldn't boot. The problem was something called stiction. The grease inside the drive can congeal a little when the drive is finally powered down, and the motor inside isn't powerful enough to restart it. The trick is to take it out of the machine and spin it like a record in your hand. That is often all it takes to get it working again. Banging it can also be effective but is more likely to damage something inside. It might not be your problem but at this point it probably can't hurt. Good luck!
