RedHat Sound Problem

OK, so I'm a newbie to Linux. Pro with MSBloatWare, but learning Linux
ground up - so I may post a dumb question now and then. To wit - the
dumb-question-du-jour:

Redhat 5.1 (had 5.2 for a while until I saw how much patching it would take
to close it up). I can't wake up a simple AWE64 sound card. When I
sndconfig it I get a modprobe error that I don't understand and can't find
any docs on.

The wierd part is that when I had the 5.2 kernel I could get sound config
but no ppp. When I dropped back to 5.1 I get the reverse - great ppp but no
sound.

Can anybody help?

Thanks:

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
